A few weeks ago the Balearic Government and Calvia Council (the council in charge of Magaluf) force closed all the businesses along the entire Magaluf strip. This action caused thousands of seasonal workers to lose their jobs, and tour operators like Jet2 to cancel flights to Majorca in general.
The same council that forced this closure, are now allowing a string of their own concerts to take place a few streets away from the businesses they closed down.
Mallorca Live Festival was aimed to take place in May 2020 with Marilyn Manson headlining the event, but due to the worldwide lockdown, the event was rescheduled to later in the year. Knowing that the full festival may not be able to go ahead this year, the council have decided to allow weekly concerts to take place while still force closing the main bars and restaurants that help bring millions of tourists to Magaluf every year.
Locals and business owners are shocked on how the council can put thousands of people out of work and force close so many bars and restaurants, yet still allow their own string of concerts to take place a few streets away. Usually, anything that helps the resort of Magaluf is a good thing, but locals are furious with how it can be one rule for some yet a different rule for others.

“You can’t even visit your grandad more than an hour. You can’t smoke whilst walking down a street. You have shut down a whole street 1km away from this festival But you have the audacity to put on an event, play music that can be heard in neighbouring villages 10-15km away!

This surely can’t go ahead? So the government bring in a law that effectively closes bars next week but they are going to allow a festival to go ahead ? .. That’s corruption isn’t it ?
Talks are now in process to protest this decision with business owners and locals looking to “fight back” against the unfair decisions that have affected their businesses and lives this summer.
What are your thoughts? Is this event good for the resort, or should the council be operating the same rules for everyone? Should they have even closed the main Magaluf strip in the first place?
